How I work

I trained as an Integrative counsellor and have studied a variety of counselling theories.

Over the years I have adapted my approach and I tend to work with a “Person-centred” foundation.  This means that I offer certain conditions that create an environment for growth and change.  My approach is also informed by “Psychodynamic” theory as I see the past as very important in shaping how we are today.  I work with you as a person and individual and will adapt the sessions to your needs.

The ways I deliver counselling……..

Face to Face counselling

My counselling practice is based in the LU2 area of Luton.  I work from my conservatory which is at the back of my house.   It is a private space where we will not be seen, overheard or disturbed.

On-line counselling

I offer counselling via video.  Which is a remote way of working face to face.  I once again work from my conservatory so as not to be overheard or disturbed.  This type of therapy can suit some clients who have time restraints or have problems getting to places for any reason.

I use a platform called Zoom which is secure and reliable.

Telephone counselling

I offer counselling on the telephone, again working from the safe space of my conservatory.   This type of counselling can be preferable to some people for the same reasons as on-line counselling.

About sessions.

Counselling sessions last 1 hour and are usually weekly.  However, if this is not possible for whatever reason we can agree a different schedule.   On our first session we will spend the session exploring what is causing you difficulty in your life.  What you would like to be different and looking at your expectations of counselling.  This initial session is very important in giving you a feel of the way I work and for you to see if you feel comfortable working with me.

In this initial session we can decide how you would like to work.  I offer either open-ended counselling or short term counselling sessions.

Short term counselling would be where we agreed to focus on a specific concern or issue that you maybe experiencing such as a difficulty in a relationship or stress due to a work issue.

Open-ended counselling is exactly that.  It is not time limited and we can work together until your feel you are ready to end.  Longer term work tends to be more appropriate for exploring the roots or underlying cause of some deeper concern.  If you imagine these issues are like a tangled necklace that you may have been struggling with for some time and can’t seem to untangle or make sense of.

Open-ended counselling gives you the space to gain self knowledge and self awareness.  It will help you untangle the issues you are experiencing and give you the choice to make changes and to do things differently
